White House Defends Suspension of US State-Run Media Funding
In a significant move aimed at curbing what it deems “radical propaganda,” President Donald Trump has issued an executive order halting government funding for the Voice of America (VOA), a U.S. state-run broadcaster. The White House explained that this action was necessary to ensure that American taxpayers no longer bear the financial burden of supporting media content that may reflect biased or politically slanted viewpoints.
The decision, which was formally announced on Saturday in a statement titled The Voice of Radical America, claims that VOA has repeatedly violated journalistic standards and shown a pattern of systemic bias. Trump, who has long been a critic of the broadcaster, signed the executive order on Friday, demanding significant cuts to the operations of VOA’s parent organization, the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). The order requires USAGM to scale back its staffing and activities to the bare minimum necessary to meet its legal obligations. The agency has also been instructed to submit a compliance plan within a week.
In response to the order, VOA’s director, Michael Abramowitz, announced that nearly all of the agency’s staff—around 1,300 employees—had been placed on administrative leave. The move has drawn sharp criticism from press freedom advocates, with National Press Club President Mike Balsamo warning that the cuts could undermine America’s commitment to an independent and free press. Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders voiced concerns that the suspension could set a dangerous precedent for press freedom on a global scale.
The White House has outlined several reasons for its decision, pointing to a series of alleged infractions committed by VOA over the years. Among the most prominent claims is that VOA has displayed consistent political bias, with sources including longtime VOA veteran Dan Robinson. Robinson, who worked at the broadcaster for 34 years, referred to VOA as a “rogue operation” with a leftist bias that often mirrors partisan views found in national media outlets.
Additional sources cited by the White House include a 2022 report from The Daily Caller, which uncovered that several VOA reporters had posted anti-Trump content on social media, a violation of the agency’s supposed commitment to impartiality. The administration also referred to a 2022 letter from U.S. Representative Scott Perry, who accused VOA of tolerating partisan political influence and using its platform for politically motivated purposes.
The White House also listed other serious allegations against VOA, including improper use of funds, as well as what it characterized as excessively favorable coverage of former President Joe Biden. Furthermore, a 2022 lawsuit claimed that VOA had been compromised by individuals with alleged anti-American and pro-Islamic State sympathies.
Kari Lake, a senior adviser to USAGM appointed by Trump, voiced similar concerns, describing the agency as a “burden to the American taxpayer” that had been compromised by inefficiency and corruption. Lake went so far as to claim that USAGM had been infiltrated by individuals with ties to terrorism and had funded “fake news” outlets.
Despite the backlash from press freedom organizations, the Trump administration remains firm in its stance that these drastic measures are necessary to address what it views as the growing influence of political bias within U.S. state-run media. The full impact of these cuts on VOA and other USAGM outlets remains to be seen, but it is clear that the White House is committed to reducing the agency’s role in American media and ensuring greater accountability for taxpayer-funded broadcasting.
