Aleksey Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, voiced deep concerns over the amplified calls for peace talks, citing an apprehension that Western allies might be driven by an unfounded fear of Russia rather than a strategic understanding. Speaking at the Halifax International Security Forum, he highlighted Ukraine’s worries about intensified discussions among certain partners, advocating for negotiations with Russia regarding the ongoing conflict and a potential ceasefire.
The Conflict as a Global Ideological Struggle
Danilov categorizes the conflict as a stark battle between democracy and tyranny, positioning the West and Ukraine on one side against Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea on the other. Stressing the urgency of defeating Russia to avert the formation of a new “axis of evil” within a couple of decades, he emphasized Ukraine’s unwavering determination to combat and emerge victorious.

Ukraine’s Vision for Victory and Global Impact
President Zelensky’s top security official outlined Ukraine’s vision of victory, envisaging the controlled decomposition of Russia into segments, not just necessitating a change in the Moscow regime but also aiming for the neighboring country’s de-sovereignization, denuclearization, and demilitarization. Additionally, Ukraine seeks increased Western support to regain its 1991 borders and transform into an economic powerhouse, showcasing the vitality of democracy and the defense of universal values.
Western Support and Ukraine’s Dependency
Danilov reiterated Ukraine’s quest for substantial Western backing to solidify its stance, urging the West to recognize Ukraine as a strategic project that champions democracy and universal values. He emphasized the imperative role of the West in upholding Ukraine’s victory as a testament to the ongoing confrontation between slavery and freedom.
Amidst these discussions, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s visit to Kiev highlighted moral support without unveiling fresh military aid, while Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized Ukraine’s deep reliance on US funding for sustaining governmental operations, portraying the continued funding as pivotal for US national security.
Throughout these deliberations, the pressing need for sustained funding for Ukraine remains a critical concern, with efforts to secure further congressional approval proving futile despite the substantial expenditure of previously sanctioned funds.
