Musk’s goal is to bring that number down to $100,000 per ton, which he believes is the price point needed to make life on Mars truly viable. To achieve this, Musk says the technology needs to improve by a factor of 10,000.

While this might sound like a monumental task, Musk insists it’s “extremely difficult, but not impossible.” His company, SpaceX, has already made strides in reducing the cost of space travel, particularly with the development of the first fully reusable rocket stage. In June, a Starship rocket successfully returned from space and landed in the Indian Ocean, completing a full mission around the globe on its fourth test flight. The planet’s day length is also remarkably similar to Earth’s, meaning that life on Mars wouldn’t require a massive adjustment to our biological clocks.

In February, Elon Musk shared his broader goal of taking one million people to Mars.
