Trump Deploys 1,700 National Guard Troops Across 19 States Amid Crime and Immigration Crackdown
A bold federal move is sweeping across the nation. President Donald Trump has activated up to 1,700 National Guard troops in 19 states to assist the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), part of a growing crackdown on crime and illegal immigration.
The deployments, which began in August 2025, are separate from the nearly 2,300 National Guard troops already stationed in Washington, D.C., where they patrol key areas to deter crime. Operating under Title 32 authority, these Guard members can provide critical support for ICE and DHS without violating the Posse Comitatus Act, handling tasks such as data collection, fingerprinting, DNA swabbing, and photographing detainees.
President Trump signaled that these operations may expand to other major cities, including Chicago and New York, highlighting his administration’s commitment to a visible federal presence where crime and immigration concerns intersect. “We’re going to make it safe, and we’re going to then go on to other places,” Trump said during a briefing with federal agents and Guard members in D.C.
While Republican-led states have not resisted the deployments, some Democratic leaders, including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, criticized the move as unprecedented and unconstitutional. Pritzker emphasized that crime in Chicago has fallen, arguing there is no emergency warranting armed federal intervention.
The White House clarified that the 19-state mobilization is primarily administrative, allowing law enforcement officers to focus on field operations, rather than direct law enforcement. Pentagon and National Guard officials stressed coordination with state governors and federal authorities to maintain command structures and operational clarity.
With crime and immigration hot-button issues driving national debate, the deployment underscores the Trump administration’s push to assert federal authority, even as tensions rise between local and national jurisdictions. As the Guard operations continue and expansion plans loom, the country watches closely to see how far federal power will stretch in the name of security.
