The war in Gaza has taken a darker turn. Israeli forces have launched a major assault on Gaza City, tightening their grip on the enclave as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demands the military speed up its campaign to eliminate Hamas.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Wednesday that they’ve entered what they call “the first stages” of taking over Gaza City—a move signaling one of the bloodiest and most consequential escalations in the conflict yet.
Brigadier General Effie Defrin, IDF spokesman, declared that troops already “hold the outskirts” and will now “deepen” their strikes inside one of the most densely populated places on Earth. With nearly one million residents and displaced civilians crammed inside, the looming urban battle threatens mass civilian casualties on a catastrophic scale.
Netanyahu himself told the nation he had instructed commanders to “shorten the timelines for seizing the last terror strongholds and for the defeat of Hamas.” In other words: no drawn-out war, no negotiations—just an all-out blitz.
Ceasefire Offer Ignored
Just days ago, Hamas proposed a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of 10 Israeli hostages. That deal, built on a framework floated by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, has reportedly been rejected outright by Israel. For Netanyahu, the only acceptable outcome appears to be total victory.
Hamas condemned Israel’s offensive as “a blatant disregard for the efforts made by the mediators,” warning that the assault on Gaza City’s nearly one million civilians exposes the true intent of Israel’s war strategy.
Casualties Mount as Urban Warfare Erupts
Meanwhile, fighting on the ground is intensifying. Near Khan Younis, 15 Hamas fighters emerged from tunnels and ambushed Israeli troops, injuring three soldiers—one critically—using anti-tank missiles and gunfire.
Since Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and saw 250 hostages taken, the war has spiraled into a humanitarian nightmare. According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed and roughly 156,000 wounded in Israel’s bombardments and ground operations.
With 60,000 more reservists being mobilized, Israel is preparing for a prolonged siege of Gaza City—despite global calls for restraint and mediation.
This isn’t just a military operation anymore. It’s an existential clash where politics, power, and raw survival collide. And right now, Gaza City is the battlefield where history—and tragedy—are being written.
