In true Trump fashion, the U.S. president took to his Truth Social platform with fire and fury, claiming “I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal.” His remarks came hot on the heels of a major Israeli airstrike on Iran — one that’s now being called one of the most consequential military escalations in the region in years.
While missiles rained down across multiple Iranian military and nuclear sites, Trump framed the deadly attack as a predictable consequence of Tehran’s refusal to bow to U.S. demands. “Just do it,” he reportedly told Iranian leadership in what he called “the strongest of words.”
The Israeli strikes weren’t just symbolic. Iran confirmed the deaths of two of its highest-ranking military officials: Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces. Several reports suggest other top military leaders and nuclear scientists were also killed in the strikes.
Trump didn’t shy away from reminding the world that Israel’s military might is largely built on U.S.-supplied weaponry. He hinted that more devastating attacks could follow unless Iran reverses course immediately. “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left, and save what was once known as the Iranian Empire,” he warned, adding fuel to an already raging fire.
Talks between the U.S. and Iran have sputtered for months. Despite secretive rounds of negotiations in Oman, there’s been no real progress. A fresh round was scheduled for Sunday — but with Iranian officials reportedly pulling out in the wake of the strikes, that meeting is likely dead in the water.
Washington’s demands? Nothing short of Iran ceasing all uranium enrichment — a red line Tehran refuses to cross. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously slammed the U.S. position as “completely detached from reality.”
Iran is currently enriching uranium to 60%, a far cry from the 3.67% limit agreed upon in the now-defunct 2015 nuclear deal — a deal Trump himself torpedoed during his first term in office.
The question now is: what comes next? Is this just posturing, or is the region hurtling toward something far more dangerous?
