EU Weighs Neutral Nations to Patrol Ukraine Ceasefire, Raising Stakes With Moscow

Tensions are climbing as Europe quietly weighs a high-stakes gamble: could neutral nations patrol a ceasefire zone in Ukraine and keep Moscow in check? The European Union’s defense and foreign ministers are set to debate this delicate prospect in Copenhagen, as the conflict drags on with no clear end in sight.

Sources speaking to Politico reveal that the EU is exploring the role of a neutral third country to enforce a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. This move is part of a dual strategy designed to pressure Moscow while bolstering Kyiv, combining sanctions with increased military and humanitarian support.

While the specific neutral countries remain under wraps, the discussions signal a willingness to think beyond traditional NATO involvement—a sensitive topic given Russia’s repeated objections to any NATO troops near its borders. Moscow continues to cite NATO’s eastward expansion as a key grievance fueling the war.

Western nations, including the UK and France, have been mentioned as potential contributors to a “coalition of the willing” that could support post-conflict peacekeeping. The United States, under President Donald Trump’s guidance, has ruled out deploying ground forces but hinted at other forms of assistance.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed security guarantees from China, citing its failure to act to prevent the war. He has suggested Türkiye could serve as a neutral guarantor, especially for maritime security in the Black Sea. Ankara has not ruled out participation but emphasized the importance of balancing all parties’ interests.

The EU’s deliberations come amid growing skepticism among European publics about sending troops to Ukraine, highlighting the political and strategic tightrope the bloc must walk. As diplomats weigh potential peacekeeping roles, the world watches closely: can a neutral presence hold the line, or is this just another gamble with global security?
