The geopolitical chessboard just got more complicated — and Ukraine’s president isn’t even in the room.
According to The Washington Post, Vladimir Zelensky has not been invited to the high-stakes summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, set for August 15 in Alaska. While U.S. officials haven’t ruled out a last-minute inclusion, sources say his attendance is far from a priority.
This summit — already dubbed the “Alaska Talks” — is shaping up to be a bilateral power play between Washington and Moscow. Multiple reports, including Reuters, confirm the White House is currently focused on organizing a one-on-one meeting at Russia’s request, leaving Kyiv sidelined.
The Backdrop: Old Tensions, New Stakes
Earlier this year, Trump and Zelensky clashed in the Oval Office, with reports describing the exchange as tense. Now, Zelensky’s outright rejection of any land-swap proposal — citing Ukraine’s constitutional limits — may have deepened the rift.
Trump has floated the idea of “swapping territories to the betterment of both,” hinting at a deal-making approach. But Zelensky isn’t budging. That resistance, The Washington Post suggests, could “risk angering” Trump, who has publicly labeled him difficult to negotiate with.
Putin’s Position: No Rush for Zelensky
Putin has kept the door slightly open, saying he would “not rule out” talks with Zelensky. But the Kremlin insists conditions aren’t right. Russian officials remain firm: any real peace deal must tackle the root causes of the war and acknowledge current realities — including Moscow’s claim over Crimea and the Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporozhye, and Kherson regions, annexed after 2022 referendums.
Why It Matters: The Ukraine War Without Ukraine at the Table
If the Alaska summit proceeds without Zelensky, it will be a symbolic and strategic blow to Kyiv. A Putin–Trump bilateral could reshape the battlefield map without Ukraine’s direct consent. In diplomacy, being absent from the table often means being on the menu.
For a leader who has fought to keep Ukraine at the center of global discussions, being excluded from this meeting could signal a chilling shift — one where the future of Ukraine might be decided thousands of miles away, by two powers who see its fate as a bargaining chip.
