Is the world witnessing a genocide in Gaza?

As the world watches in horror, the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) has officially declared that Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute genocide. This unprecedented resolution has intensified global scrutiny and sparked a fierce debate over the nature of the ongoing conflict.

The IAGS Resolution: A Historic Declaration

On August 31, 2025, the IAGS passed a resolution stating that Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide as outlined in the 1948 United Nations Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. The resolution was supported by 86% of the 28% of members who voted, representing a significant consensus among genocide scholars worldwide.

The IAGS’s declaration is based on a comprehensive analysis of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in over 65,000 Palestinian deaths, widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, and severe restrictions on humanitarian aid. The scholars argue that these actions align with the genocidal acts defined in Article II of the Genocide Convention, including:

  • Killing members of the group: The extensive loss of life among Palestinians in Gaza.
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm: The physical and psychological trauma inflicted on the population.
  • Deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction: The imposition of blockades and destruction of essential infrastructure leading to famine and deprivation.
  • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group: Allegations of policies and actions that hinder reproductive rights and healthcare access.

Global Reactions: A Divided World

The IAGS’s resolution has elicited a range of responses from governments, international organizations, and human rights groups.

United Nations Commission of Inquiry

On September 16, 2025, the United Nations Human Rights Council released a report from its Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The commission concluded that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, citing evidence of four out of five genocidal acts defined in the 1948 Genocide Convention. The report also found sufficient grounds to establish genocidal intent among Israeli political and military leaders.

Middle Eastern Governments

Leaders from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman have expressed grave concerns about the escalating violence in Gaza. Egypt’s Foreign Minister warned that the region is on the brink of collapse, criticizing Israel’s actions as genocidal and urging for a Palestinian state as a prerequisite for regional stability. Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for global recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Palestinian Authority

In a remote address to the United Nations, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas denounced Israel’s actions in Gaza as a “war of genocide” and called for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian aid access, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza territory. He also declared that Hamas would not be involved in Gaza’s postwar governance, aligning with conditions set by Israel and the U.S.

International Human Rights Organizations

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have conducted extensive investigations into the situation in Gaza. Amnesty International has accused Israel of committing genocide, while Human Rights Watch has reported on widespread violations of international law, including collective punishment and targeting of civilians.

The Humanitarian Crisis: A Dire Situation

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. Over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 160,000 wounded. The destruction of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, has left the population without access to essential services. The imposition of blockades and restrictions on humanitarian aid has exacerbated the crisis, leading to widespread famine and displacement.

The international community has called for immediate action to address the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people and to hold accountable those responsible for the ongoing violence.

Conclusion: A Call for Accountability and Action

The declaration by the IAGS and the subsequent reports from the United Nations and other international bodies have brought the situation in Gaza into sharp focus. The allegations of genocide are among the most serious under international law, and they demand a response from the global community.

As the conflict continues, it is imperative that all parties adhere to international humanitarian law and work towards a peaceful resolution that ensures the rights and dignity of all people in the region. The world must stand united in condemning acts of genocide and in supporting efforts to prevent further atrocities.
