The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to formalize the party’s ongoing impeachment probe into President Joe Biden’s alleged corruption and influence peddling. The resolution passed with a 221-212 vote, strictly along party lines.
The impeachment inquiry received unanimous support from Republicans, with every member of the party voting in favor. In contrast, all Democrats opposed the inquiry, with the exception of one member who was absent.
Biden issued a statement expressing his view that the House Republicans’ inquiry is a futile exercise in political posturing, lacking any real substance or evidence to back it up.
The GOP began investigating Biden’s alleged misdeeds after the party retook control of the house following 2020’s midterm elections, with the House Oversight Committee and House Judiciary Committee leading the probe. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced an impeachment inquiry in September, claiming that the committees had uncovered a “culture of corruption” surrounding the Biden family.

Republicans claim that the Biden family obtained approximately $24 million in payments from Chinese, Kazakhstani, Romanian, Russian, and Ukrainian business figures and politicians through shell companies, based on witness testimonies and information found on Hunter Biden’s laptop. The US Treasury Department reportedly identified 150 of these transactions as potentially suspicious.
The allegations involve Hunter Biden, who is accused of using his father’s position to secure business deals with foreign clients. Hunter’s former business partner, Devon Archer, testified before the Oversight Committee that Hunter’s appointment to the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, was solely to ensure the company’s influence over US policy.
Despite evidence in emails exchanged between Hunter and his clients, President Biden claims to have no awareness of or participation in his son’s business endeavors. Additionally, Archer has made accusations that Joe Biden had multiple meals with Hunter’s clients and that Hunter received financial transfers directly after at least two of these meetings.
With the inquiry formalized, Republicans say that they will have greater investigative powers, particularly when it comes to compelling witnesses to testify. Earlier on Wednesday, Hunter Biden defied a subpoena to testify before a closed-door hearing of the House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee, stating that he would only answer questions in a public session.
A live broadcast of the session would be aired on news networks, enabling Democrats to engage in filibustering and deliver speeches in support of the Bidens. However, it would not be permissible to discuss classified information during a public hearing.
Before the vote, James Comer, the chair of the Oversight Committee, announced that they plan to question the president’s son in a private session, and then they will eagerly host a public hearing.
