The internet is ablaze after shocking footage revealed TMZ staff allegedly laughing and clapping during the announcement of Charlie Kirk’s murder. The conservative activist and Turning Point USA founder, just 31, was tragically killed while answering questions at a Utah college event—an act authorities have now called a political assassination.
The livestream, meant to report the devastating news, instead captured what some viewers describe as “callous celebration” in the background. Co-founder Harvey Levin tried to maintain composure as he delivered the tragic update, but the laughter and clapping from staffers could still be heard.
Social media erupted. “During today’s TMZ livestream, employees were heard cheering, clapping, and celebrating just 30 seconds before announcing Charlie Kirk’s death,” one user on X wrote. Others called the behavior “disgusting” and “shameful,” condemning the network for what many view as an appalling lack of respect for a murdered husband and father.
TMZ scrambled to explain. In an apology, Levin insisted the staffers were reacting to a car chase unrelated to the news. Co-host Charles Latibeaudiere echoed the apology, calling the timing “horrible” but insisting the laughter “was not about that.” Still, many viewers remain unconvinced. Comments flooded in accusing the network of being tone-deaf and dishonest.
President Donald Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social, calling him “great, and even legendary” and praising his work with America’s youth. Meanwhile, security concerns are being raised: footage indicates the assassin fired from a roof roughly 200 feet away, with minimal event security on hand.
TMZ faces not only a public relations nightmare but a national conversation about the responsibility of media outlets when covering tragedy. For many, the incident has become a stark reminder of the deep divisions and dangers in today’s political climate.
