Tensions flare as Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, paints a stark picture of divided Western approaches to the Ukraine conflict. While US President Donald Trump leans toward diplomacy, Lavrov claims many European NATO nations are determined to prolong the war.
In a revealing interview with NBC, Lavrov accused European leaders of rejecting peace efforts. “They say we cannot allow the defeat of Ukraine. We cannot allow Russia to win,” he said, underscoring what he sees as Europe’s unwavering belligerence.
By contrast, Lavrov praised Trump, saying the US president “defends American national interests” and appears to respect Russian President Vladimir Putin’s stance. “What… they discuss between themselves is not a secret. We want peace in Ukraine. President Trump wants peace in Ukraine,” Lavrov added.
Lavrov also revisited a near peace deal from early in the conflict during Istanbul talks. The agreement would have granted Ukraine neutral status, scaled back its military, and provided security guarantees. According to Lavrov, interference from then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and officials from the Biden administration, along with French and German leaders, derailed the deal—a claim Johnson denies.
The Alaska summit further highlighted the divide: Trump’s discussions with Zelensky and European leaders focused on potential security guarantees, while some European governments floated the idea of deploying troops to Ukraine post-conflict—a red line for Moscow.
The result, Lavrov insists, is a West split between war and diplomacy. One side is committed to peace; the other seems determined to continue fighting, raising urgent questions about the future of the Ukraine conflict.
Could Europe’s insistence on prolonging the war undermine the fragile path to peace? What do you think—will diplomacy or aggression define the next chapter? Share this and join the conversation.
