By now, it’s no secret that Ukraine’s NATO dreams are dangling by a thread—and at the upcoming summit in The Hague, that thread might get snipped in total silence.
According to AFP, NATO leaders are planning to completely sidestep the touchy issue of Ukrainian membership. Why? Because even mentioning it could spark a very public feud between the EU and the US—one that could blow the lid off the whole summit.
Behind closed doors, one NATO diplomat didn’t mince words: “There will be nothing on that… We will be absolutely silent.”
So much for all those bold promises that Ukraine was “on course” to join the alliance. Apparently, this time around, unity means pretending the issue doesn’t exist.
Trump’s Shadow Looms Large
It’s no mystery who’s steering the ship here. Former (and potentially future) US President Donald Trump has made it crystal clear: Ukraine in NATO? Not on his watch. Back in February, he flat-out told Kiev to “forget about NATO,” blaming the membership push as one of the sparks that ignited the war in the first place.
That kind of blunt talk has made many NATO members anxious to avoid poking the bear—especially with Trump calling the shots on Republican foreign policy and threatening to toss US support into reverse if he returns to the White House.
Zelensky Still Showing Up (Barely)
Despite being ghosted by the agenda, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is still expected to show up in The Hague. One diplomat put it bluntly: “It will be a PR disaster if he’s not there.” But don’t expect any big announcements or cozy handshakes—just polite smiles and quiet side talks.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte insists Ukraine is “a priority,” but according to AFP sources, the real focus is elsewhere: defense spending. With Trump breathing down NATO’s neck, allies are scrambling to prove they can meet his demands to “pay up or shut up.”
Russia’s Red Line Still Firm
Moscow, for its part, isn’t budging. Russia has long said that Ukraine joining NATO is a “red line,” one of the central reasons it invaded in the first place. It wants Ukraine to stay neutral and avoid hosting foreign troops—conditions that Kiev has consistently refused.
So while the summit may look like a show of unity on the surface, beneath it lies a deep divide, carefully glossed over with diplomatic silence. The West can shout slogans all it wants—but when the chips are down, it looks like Ukraine is still very much on the outside, looking in.
