Modi and Xi Meet in China: Are India and China Quietly Rewriting the World Order?

Share This:

Two leaders, two nations, and nearly three billion people between them. On Sunday in Tianjin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sat down with Chinese President Xi Jinping — and in that handshake, the world caught a glimpse of a shifting balance of power.

It was Modi’s first trip to China since 2018, and the timing could not be more symbolic. Just five years ago, India and China were locked in deadly clashes along their disputed Himalayan border. Now, after months of painstaking negotiations, the two giants are not only calming their frontiers but also reviving old channels of cooperation — from reopening trade routes to restarting direct flights.

“We are committed to moving forward on the basis of mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity,” Modi declared, calling the talks a step toward peace, stability, and prosperity for the 2.8 billion people both nations represent.

But this isn’t just about border calm. Washington’s recent decision to slap 50% tariffs on Indian goods has changed the calculus. With the U.S. openly pressuring New Delhi over trade and its ties to Moscow, Beijing has stepped in with vocal support — vowing to “stand with India” against American bullying. The symbolism is stark: rivals on the battlefield just years ago now finding common cause against Western dominance.

And it doesn’t stop there. Russia is quietly nudging India and China toward reviving the long-dormant Russia-India-China (RIC) trilateral format — a strategic triangle designed to challenge U.S.-led unipolarity. If Modi and Xi manage to smooth over their differences, the RIC could reemerge as the backbone of a multipolar world, tilting the global order away from Washington and Brussels.

The meeting in Tianjin wasn’t just another diplomatic photo-op. It was a warning shot to the West: the world’s most populous nations are talking again, and their combined weight could redraw the global rules of the game.
