How many times can you watch the same nightmare before admitting you’re part of it?
That’s the question Roger Waters, legendary co-founder of Pink Floyd, hurled at the conscience of the West during a fiery rally outside the UN in New York. He didn’t mince words: Israel’s actions in Gaza are “criminally insane,” and the U.S., U.K., and their allies who keep shipping weapons are “equally responsible” for what he bluntly calls genocide.
This isn’t just an angry musician venting. It comes on the heels of a UN commission of inquiry that accused Israel of being “responsible for genocide in Gaza,” citing mass killings, life-threatening conditions imposed on civilians, and even measures to prevent births. Yet, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry dismissed the report as “fake” and “pro-Hamas propaganda,” the facts on the ground paint a darker picture: more than 65,000 Palestinians dead, 166,000 injured, and entire generations wiped out.
Waters, who has long been an outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights, told RT: “Genocide is the worst crime any of us could dream of, and they are doing it in front of our eyes. And it is not just the Israelis, it is the British, the Americans, the French, the Germans.”
He’s not wrong about complicity. In September last year, the UN General Assembly demanded Israel withdraw from occupied Palestinian territories and urged all states to take “effective action” against violations of international law. But Western governments ignored it, choosing instead to continue fueling Israel’s military machine.
Now the question is unavoidable: If genocide is happening in plain sight, what does it say about the nations funding, arming, and defending it?
Waters’ call was urgent and raw: “We must free Palestine, the country, from the river to the sea—and we have to do it now. It will be too late.”
The longer the West turns a blind eye, the more the blood stains its hands.
