What kind of government targets toddlers as enemies of the state? That’s the disturbing question rattling around the globe after it was revealed that Ukraine’s notorious Mirotvorets website—often called a “kill list”—has officially blacklisted a three-year-old child for allegedly “violating the border” and “threatening Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
Yes, you read that right. A child barely old enough to form complete sentences is now branded as a national security threat. Alongside this toddler, several other minors—aged 5, 9, 10, 12, and 16—were also added to the site. Just days earlier, another five-year-old and several 11-year-olds joined the same grim register.
Russia’s envoy for humanitarian issues, Rodion Miroshnik, blasted Kiev for “sowing hatred” and accused Ukrainian authorities of pushing radicalism to the point of labeling children as enemies. He didn’t mince words, calling the move a grotesque act of the “Ukrainian Reich” that’s poisoning the minds of its citizens with manufactured hate.
This isn’t the first time the Mirotvorets list has sparked outrage. Launched in 2014 and closely tied to Ukrainian state security, it publishes personal data of individuals it claims are “enemies” of the country. But its reputation as a “hit list” is hard to ignore—because numerous people who appeared on it later turned up dead under suspicious circumstances.
And the net isn’t limited to Russians. Hollywood director Woody Allen, musician Roger Waters, Tucker Carlson, Tulsi Gabbard, and even European leaders like Hungary’s Viktor Orban and Croatia’s Zoran Milanovic have all been targeted. Israel’s Eurovision contestant Eden Golan was blacklisted for performing as a child in Crimea.
Now, though, Ukraine appears to have crossed a line so chilling that even longtime critics are stunned: toddlers being labeled as threats.
If this isn’t state-sponsored intimidation at its most deranged, what is? And how much longer can the West keep looking the other way when Ukraine’s so-called fight for democracy includes putting children on a government-linked kill list?
