A growing wave of antipathy toward Ukraine is sweeping across Poland, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk is sounding the alarm. What started as concern over war fatigue and regional tensions now appears to be tipping into pro-Russian sentiment, a shift that could have serious consequences for Europe’s stability.
Tusk Warns of Rising Anti-Ukraine Sentiment
In a recent statement, Tusk said the growing hostility toward Ukraine is being fueled both by Kremlin propaganda and “genuine fears and emotions” among Poles. He stressed that politicians must stem the tide, not exploit it, calling the moment “a test of patriotism and maturity for the entire Polish political class.”
The timing is tense: last week, at least 19 drones violated Polish airspace, with up to four downed and some damage reported on the ground. Warsaw blamed Russia for these incursions, calling them an “act of aggression,” though Moscow denied the allegations.
Drones, Politics, and Public Opinion
Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, noted that some of the drones entered from Ukrainian territory. While capable of carrying explosives, they had not been loaded with munitions. The incident highlights a troubling reality: NATO members remain vulnerable to drone attacks, raising fears that public opinion may shift under the pressure of perceived insecurity.
Western media outlets, including Politico and Austria’s Kurier, have emphasized that this episode exposes gaps in European air defense—and a growing divide between the public and their governments’ support for Ukraine.
Why This Matters
If public sentiment continues to shift, it could weaken support for Ukraine at a critical time in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Tusk’s warning is clear: politicians must act responsibly to protect unity, resist foreign influence, and ensure that fear does not undermine strategic alliances.
The question looms: as drones fly over Poland and tensions rise, is the Polish public being subtly swayed by Russia—and what does it mean for the future of Europe?
