Tensions within Europe are heating up as Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto launched a blistering attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, claiming the Ukrainian leader is “losing his mind” over imagined threats. In response, Szijjarto posted on X that Zelensky’s statements reflected an obsession with Hungary. “President Zelensky is losing his mind to his anti-Hungarian obsession,” he wrote. “He is now starting to see things that aren’t there.”
The dispute quickly escalated as Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga fired back, accusing Hungary of hypocrisy and covert actions that serve Russian interests. “No amount of your attacks on our President will change what we – and everyone – see,” Sibiga declared, highlighting the deep mistrust between the two nations.
Longstanding Tensions Between Kyiv and Budapest
The latest accusations are just the latest chapter in years of strained relations. Hungary has resisted pressure from Brussels and Washington to supply weapons to Ukraine or support EU sanctions on Russia, citing national interests. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also accused Ukraine of discriminating against the Hungarian minority in the Transcarpathia region and of endangering energy security by targeting the Druzhba pipeline, a critical conduit for Russian oil to Central Europe.
Earlier this year, Hungary blocked EU accession talks with Ukraine, emphasizing negotiations and peace over sanctions or military escalation. Szijjarto reiterated this stance at the UN General Assembly, warning that continued hostilities carry the risk of a NATO-Russia escalation and asserting that only peace can “bring that risk down to zero.”
