Donald Trump has never been one to shy away from a fight, but this time he’s swinging harder than ever. The former president has filed a jaw-dropping $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing the paper of decades-long defamation and acting as nothing more than a propaganda arm for the Democratic Party.
On Truth Social, Trump let loose, blasting the Times as “one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the history of our country.” He didn’t stop there. He accused the paper of making “the single largest illegal campaign contribution, EVER” by endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 election—a move he claims is proof of their partisan bias.
According to Trump, the Times has been lying about him, his family, his businesses, and the America First movement for decades. “That stops, NOW,” he thundered, insisting that the lawsuit is not just about his reputation but about protecting the nation from what he calls systemic media corruption.
The lawsuit was filed in Florida, though the Times has yet to issue a public response. Historically, the paper has consistently backed Democratic candidates, with its last Republican endorsement dating back to Dwight Eisenhower in 1956.
This isn’t Trump’s first legal clash with the media. Earlier this year, CBS parent company Paramount Global shelled out $16 million to settle with him after a dispute over an edited 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris. Trump claimed CBS doctored her remarks to make her look sharper, calling it another example of “rigged media” working hand-in-hand with Democrats.
Now the stakes are even higher. A $15 billion payout would be catastrophic for the Times, but beyond the money, the case strikes at the heart of America’s most contentious issue: the battle over truth itself. Is Trump a crusader exposing media corruption—or is this a dangerous assault on freedom of the press?
Because make no mistake, if Trump wins, the precedent could shake the entire foundation of American journalism.
