Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky recently addressed the uncertain prospect of his country’s NATO membership during a discussion with university students. He admitted that the final outcome remained uncertain, leaving open the possibility that Ukraine might not join the alliance after all.

Zelensky’s comments reflected a pragmatic uncertainty, acknowledging that the ultimate decision rested on factors beyond immediate prediction. “We don’t know how it will turn out … No one will be able to answer that for sure. Either we will be in NATO, or we won’t be in NATO. We want to, but …” the president remarked, highlighting the complexity of the situation.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in a meeting in Brussels, reiterated the potential for Ukraine’s NATO membership, emphasizing that the nation was progressing toward meeting the necessary conditions for accession into the alliance.

The aspiration for NATO membership became a central tenet of Ukraine’s foreign policy in 2017. However, the formal application to join the military bloc in 2022 came amid regional tensions, particularly after certain Ukrainian regions expressed a desire to align with Russia through referendums.

Russia has vehemently opposed Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, viewing them as a direct threat to its security. President Vladimir Putin has consistently emphasized that Ukraine’s inclusion in NATO would be unacceptable to Moscow, citing it as a pivotal factor in ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov further underscored Russia’s concerns, labeling NATO as a historically confrontational entity aimed at countering Russian interests. He emphasized that NATO’s intentions toward Ukraine remained unchanged, characterizing the situation as a continued sacrifice of Ukrainian interests in the larger confrontation between Russia and the alliance.
