Computer scientist Paul Graham has voiced his concern that, within the next 20 years, the widespread use of AI in workplaces and schools may lead to a dramatic decline in people’s ability to write. While this might seem like a harmless convenience, Graham warns that relying on AI could lead to a “world of thinks and think-nots,” where only a small portion of society retains advanced cognitive skills.

Historically, when technology replaces certain skills, those skills fade from common practice. Graham likens the situation to the decline of blacksmithing, which, though once essential, became obsolete as modern manufacturing took over. While we don’t feel the loss of blacksmithing today, Graham insists that the erosion of writing skills would be a more troubling change. In his view, a society that can no longer write would be a society that can no longer fully engage in critical thinking.

He paints a picture of a divided world, where only a select few who actively choose to retain their writing abilities will maintain the intellectual edge. “A world divided into writes and write-nots is more dangerous than it sounds,” he asserts. This hypothetical future evokes pre-industrial times when physical strength was largely a product of one’s profession. Today, we exercise by choice rather than necessity. In a similar vein, Graham believes that writing may soon be a skill practiced only by those who deliberately seek to develop it.
