In a move that could reshape global econoımic alliances, Turkey, a longstanding NATO member, is eyeing membership in the BRICS group of nations. This announcement came straight from the Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, during his visit to China, where he highlighted Türkiye’s aspirations to integrate into global economic platforms beyond the European Union.

Exploring Alternatives Amidst EU Hurdles

Türkiye’s quest for EU membership has been met with roadblocks, primarily due to opposition from certain member states. In light of this, Ankara is now turning its gaze towards BRICS as a viable alternative for economic integration. Minister Fidan emphasized the significance of BRICS as a cooperative platform, offering Türkiye and other nations a promising alternative.

BRICS: A Promising Avenue for Türkiye

While acknowledging that BRICS has a journey ahead, Minister Fidan expressed optimism about the potential it holds. Türkiye sees BRICS not only as an economic powerhouse but also as a platform for fostering collaboration among nations with diverse backgrounds and interests.

Eager Anticipation for Upcoming Meeting

Minister Fidan eagerly anticipates the upcoming meeting of BRICS foreign ministers, where Türkiye’s interest in joining the group will be on the agenda. This gathering, set to take place in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, promises to be a pivotal moment for Türkiye’s aspirations within the BRICS framework.

Kremlin’s Welcome Gesture

Russia, the current chair of BRICS, has welcomed Türkiye’s interest in joining the group. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed that Türkiye’s membership will be discussed during the summit. While acknowledging the challenges of accommodating numerous aspiring members, Peskov assured that BRICS values active engagement and will maintain communication with all interested parties.

Inclusive Membership Criteria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated BRICS’s commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing the group’s openness to nations with diverse political and economic systems. The primary criterion for membership remains adherence to the principle of sovereign equality among states, a principle that resonates with Türkiye’s aspirations for a fair and equitable global order.

As Türkiye explores new avenues for economic collaboration, its potential entry into BRICS marks a significant shift in geopolitical dynamics, underscoring the evolving landscape of global partnerships and alliances.
