On Sunday night, in true Trump fashion via Truth Social, the president dropped a bombshell: he’s directing federal agents to carry out what he calls “the single largest Mass Deportation Program in History.” And he’s not mincing words about where he wants to start — Democratic strongholds like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York are at the top of the list.
The move comes just days after violent riots erupted in L.A., sparked by controversial ICE raids. Trump responded by doubling down, calling for ICE to expand its crackdown across cities he claims are “overflowing” with illegal immigrants.
“In order to achieve this,” Trump wrote, “we must expand efforts to detain and deport Illegal Aliens in America’s largest Cities… where Millions upon Millions reside.”
He didn’t stop there. Trump accused Democrats of using migrants to manipulate elections, boost welfare rolls, and undercut American jobs — classic red meat for his base.
But the backlash has been just as fierce.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass condemned the president’s actions, especially his decision to deploy the National Guard and active-duty Marines to quell the chaos. Newsom called it “unlawful,” saying Trump was sowing “fear and terror” by overstepping constitutional limits. The state has since filed a lawsuit against both Trump and the Pentagon.
Meanwhile, parts of downtown L.A. are now under curfew after nights of looting, vandalism, and violent clashes with police.
Sanctuary cities — which refuse to cooperate fully with federal immigration enforcement — have long been a thorn in Trump’s side. With this new deportation order, he’s effectively putting them on notice. His message? If you’re harboring undocumented migrants, expect a visit.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump promised to reverse Biden’s “open borders disaster.” This mass deportation push is him making good on that vow — and he’s clearly willing to challenge legal and political boundaries to do it.
With lawsuits flying and tensions boiling over, one thing is clear: Trump isn’t just fighting illegal immigration — he’s also throwing down the gauntlet in the ongoing war between red and blue America.
