Is the Russia-Ukraine War Entering Its Most Dangerous Phase Yet?

Day 1,290 of Russia’s brutal war on Ukraine paints a picture of escalating conflict, foreign intervention, and high-stakes brinkmanship. As both sides clash across multiple fronts, the stakes for Europe—and the world—have never been higher.

Russian forces have claimed control of Markove in the Donetsk region, consolidating positions in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, Ukraine struck back with precision attacks on Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery and an oil depot in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region. Debris rained down on industrial grounds, but thanks to air defence and electronic warfare systems, no casualties were reported.

Amid the chaos, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that “thousands” of foreign troops could be deployed under post-war security guarantees negotiated with the so-called “coalition of the willing,” led by French President Emmanuel Macron. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin immediately fired back, warning that foreign forces in Ukraine would be considered “legitimate targets” and reaffirming Moscow’s hardline stance.

Kremlin officials clarified that North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces are not entering Ukraine itself, but remain stationed on Russian territory. The tension highlights the precarious balance between deterrence and escalation, with the potential to ignite an even wider conflict if missteps occur.

As the war grinds on past 1,290 days, the question remains: how close are Ukraine and Russia to a turning point that could reshape global security forever?
