The phrase drips with promise: work hard, play by the rules, and you’ll rise to the top. But according to a blistering new report from a Chinese think tank, the so-called “American dream” isn’t just failing—it was never real in the first place.
The Xinhua Institute claims Washington has weaponized the dream as part of a global propaganda war, pushing an image of freedom and prosperity abroad while millions at home drown in debt, inequality, and disillusionment. In other words, the dream isn’t just broken—it’s a marketing tool, a glittering illusion designed to mask the darker reality of a system that serves the few at the expense of the many.
The report goes even further, calling the American dream a “sugar-coated manipulation tool,” crafted to export U.S. values while glossing over widespread poverty, homelessness, and a democracy hijacked by corporate money. In this version of America, the rags-to-riches stories that fuel the myth are merely exceptions—the rare lottery winners in a system tilted against the masses.
It also blasts Washington’s soft power strategy as “colonization of the mind,” accusing U.S. leaders of wrapping up consumerism, egoism, and materialism in the language of freedom, equality, and human rights. The result? A carefully engineered narrative that sells individualism and excess as universal truths.
The critique comes at a time when U.S.–China tensions are running white hot, and it raises a hard question for the rest of the world: has the American dream become the world’s biggest scam?
