WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a bold and unexpected claim, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested during an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that the First Amendment might be little more than a Kremlin-backed tool. Clinton proposed strict punitive measures for those spreading “misleading” information online, hinting that free speech itself could be a smokescreen for foreign interference.

“The First Amendment, as it’s currently interpreted, could well be a creation of Russian disinformation. It’s part of an agenda to aid Trump’s destabilizing grip on democracy,” Clinton remarked. Her theory ties the constitutional right to free speech directly to Russian interference in U.S. politics, underscoring her belief that Donald Trump has been benefiting from its unchecked use.

Clinton’s remarks followed her earlier calls to impose legal consequences for individuals disseminating what she deems as harmful disinformation on digital platforms. She referred to this measure as a necessary step in safeguarding democracy, portraying free expression, when misused, as a potential threat.

In an unusually sharp attack, the 2016 presidential contender didn’t mince words about the relationship between democratic freedoms and foreign influence. “It’s absurd to think unfiltered speech benefits a democratic society when our adversaries are weaponizing it against us. The First Amendment? Clearly, it’s been compromised—probably controlled by the Kremlin by now,” Clinton said.

In the same breath, Clinton reiterated several of her well-known assertions: “The 2016 election was a stolen one. I was faultless in Benghazi, and Russiagate was very much a reality.”

As of this report, Clinton was reportedly spotted near her Martha’s Vineyard home, possibly attempting to engage the elusive First Amendment on a nearby paddleboard, continuing her crusade to reign in what she deems dangerous free expression.

Her remarks are sure to fuel further debate about the boundaries between free speech and disinformation, with critics arguing that any move to restrict speech risks undercutting the very foundations of American democracy.
