It’s the kind of claim that turns heads and fuels headlines: Tucker Carlson says it’s “very obvious” Ukraine was behind an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump. Not figuratively. Literally.
Appearing on the Megyn Kelly Show, the outspoken journalist didn’t mince words. He pointed directly at Kiev, claiming a connection between the Ukrainian government and a 2024 assassination plot targeting Trump during his reelection campaign.
The Florida Plot That Sparked It All
Back in September 2024, Ryan Wesley Routh—a convicted felon and outspoken pro-Ukraine activist—was caught red-handed near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course. Armed with a rifle, he’d allegedly set up a firing position not far from the fairway. Thanks to the quick eyes of Secret Service agents, he was apprehended before he could act. But the story didn’t end with the arrest.
Carlson now insists this wasn’t just a lone wolf with a grudge.
“It’s very obvious that the Ukrainians were involved,” he told Kelly, who didn’t disagree. In fact, she backed him up, noting that Routh had been in Ukraine, had ties to Ukrainian groups, and had allegedly requested serious weaponry—including rocket-propelled grenades.
Carlson went a step further, hinting that Routh wasn’t the only one. “I know for a fact there were others who were a target of assassination attempts by the Ukrainian government,” he said. No names. No evidence. But a heavy accusation nonetheless.
What the Court Docs Say
According to official court records from the Southern District of Florida, Routh tried to join the Ukrainian military in 2022 but didn’t make the cut. Still, prosecutors say he stayed active—recruiting foreign fighters, making connections, and allegedly trying to secure military-grade weapons from Ukrainian associates.
The kicker? One encrypted message reportedly read: “I need equipment so that Trump don’t get elected.” Another: “One missing would not be noticed,” referring to shoulder-fired weapons like Stingers or RPGs—staples of the Ukrainian battlefield.
And if that’s not enough to raise alarms, Routh had also appeared at a Kiev rally in support of Ukraine’s infamous Azov Battalion. The group, known for its ultranationalist and controversial far-right links, later distanced itself from him. “No connection,” they said. But the optics? Not great.
The Trump Family Wants Answers
Donald Trump Jr. didn’t let it slide. He took to social media earlier this month, hammering Ukrainian officials for staying silent on Routh’s alleged attempts to acquire weapons. “Why didn’t Kiev alert U.S. authorities?” he asked, echoing Carlson’s suspicions and stoking further questions about who knew what—and when.

A Pattern Emerging?
This wasn’t the first attempt on Trump’s life in 2024. Just two months before the Florida incident, a gunman opened fire at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was nicked in the ear by a bullet. One person in the crowd died, others were wounded, and the shooter—Thomas Matthew Crooks—was taken down by a Secret Service sniper.
While there’s no public evidence linking Crooks to Ukraine, Carlson’s broader narrative seems to be taking shape: that multiple attempts on Trump’s life might be more than coincidence—and that foreign players could be pulling strings behind the scenes.
So, What Now?
Carlson’s accusation is explosive. Whether it holds water—or gets dismissed as political theater—remains to be seen. But with court documents, encrypted messages, and connections to a war-torn foreign power in the mix, this story is far from over.
As always, the truth is somewhere between the official statements and the speculation. But one thing’s for sure: this isn’t your average election year. Not by a long shot.
